Can you bring a dog to Bali?

How easy is it to bring your dog to Indonesia?

Indonesia is a hard country to enter with a dog. It’s not just the paperwork that makes it difficult, you need an approved entry route, import permit, ISO-compliant microchip, rabies titer test, health examination, and quarantine arrangements.

Moving around Indonesia with your dog adds another layer of difficulty. Entering through Jakarta doesn’t mean you can freely travel with your dog to every island, and Bali is a no go for dog travel. You also need to plan how your dog will leave Indonesia before you book your trip.

Indonesia is not the destination to approach casually. Your route needs to be legal from arrival through departure, and every step confirmed before flights are booked.

Key requirements for bringing your dog to Indonesia

• Quarantine arrangements confirmed with the office responsible for the approved port of entry
• Original vaccination, laboratory, permit, and health documents available for inspection
• An entry route and final destination that comply with Indonesia’s regional animal-movement restrictions

Keep in mind your dog may also need new paperwork before leaving Indonesia depending on how long your stay is and your next destination’s requirements.

Flying to Indonesia with your dog

Flying to Indonesia with a dog requires careful route planning. Before booking your ticket confirm the approved port of entry, import permit, quarantine arrangements, and regional movement rules. Then check the airlines cabin or cargo policy, carrier limits, breed restrictions, document rules, and pet reservation process.

Don’t book a flight to Bali or plan to enter at another airport and travel with your dog later to Bali. Your arrival airport, quarantine process, final destination, and exit route all need to work together.

Traveling to Indonesia by land or sea with your dog

Entering Indonesia by road, ferry, or private vessel doesn’t bypass the import requirements. Your dog still needs to have an approved entry point, import permit, health certificate, rabies documents, and quarantine arrangements for the port where you will enter.

Before planning your route confirm the border crossing or seaport is able to process dogs. You also need to use caution with travel between Indonesian islands. Even if domestic transport is available, regional animal movement restrictions will prevent your dog from traveling to certain destinations.

You cannot use a ferry or overland route to take your dog to Bali.

• Treating Bali like any other destination. You cannot enter through Jakarta and then move your dog into Bali by air, road, or ferry.
• Applying for the import permit too late. The permit must be approved before your dog travels.
• Using the wrong microchip. Your dog needs an ISO 11784 or ISO 11785-compliant microchip, and the number must match every document.
• Missing the rabies titer requirement. Your dog needs a rabies antibody result of at least 0.5 IU/ml.
• Getting the health examination too early. The veterinary examination must be completed within five days before departure.
• Failing to arrange quarantine before travel. Quarantine arrangements must be confirmed with the office serving your approved port of entry.
• Relying only on airline approval. An airline can accept your dog for the flight while the arrival route still fails Indonesia’s import rules.
• Ignoring the exit process. Bringing your dog into Indonesia does not automatically clear the dog to leave through any airport or move between islands.

The basic process looks like this:

1. Confirm that your dog can enter Indonesia from the country you are traveling from.
2. Choose an approved port of entry and confirm the quarantine arrangements for that port.
3. Make sure your final destination is not affected by regional movement restrictions. Bali cannot be used as an entry point or onward destination for your dog.
4. Confirm that your dog has an ISO 11784 or ISO 11785-compliant microchip.
5. Check the rabies vaccination and complete the required rabies titer test.
6. Apply for the import permit and complete the required pre-arrival notification.
7. Arrange the official health certificate and veterinary examination within five days before departure.
8. Travel with the original permit, vaccination record, titer result, health certificate, and quarantine documents.
9. Present your dog and documents to quarantine officials when you arrive.
10. Complete the quarantine and release process assigned to your approved port of entry.

Leaving Indonesia with your dog

You need a separate export process to leave Indonesia. The documents you used to enter don’t automatically clear fido for departure. The requirements can also change depending on the airport, seaport, destination country, and island your dog is leaving from.

Before you enter Indonesia, confirm your planned exit route can legally process your dog. Your dog will need Indonesia’s export health and quarantine clearance, along with the documents required by your next destination and airline.

What Indonesia is like with a dog

Indonesia can work well for longer stays with a dog, but daily life will depend heavily on where you are based. Jakarta has the strongest access to veterinarians, pet shops, delivery services, and larger dog-friendly rentals. It is also crowded, hot, noisy, and has a lot of traffic, so walks and vet visits will take more planning.

The biggest issue each day is the climate. Indonesia is hot and humid, and midday walks are not good for dogs that overheat easily. Early morning and evening walks will be the most comfortable for your dog. Keep the middle of the day for air conditioning, shade, and resting.

Street dogs are common in some areas. This doesn’t mean walking your dog is difficult, you just need to stay alert and keep your dog close.

Getting around can also limit your adventures. Public transport isn’t built around pet travel and rideshare and taxi acceptance often is up to the driver.
