Can I Bring My Dog to Costa Rica?

You can bring your dog to Costa Rica if you prepare the right documents before you fly. Most dogs can enter Costa Rica provided they have the right veterinary paperwork, current vaccinations, parasite treatment, and airline approval.

The important thing to understand is that Costa Rica’s entry rules and your airline’s pet rules are separate. Costa Rica may allow your dog to enter but your airline still decides whether your dog can fly in cabin, cargo, or on that specific route.

Is Costa Rica a good country to bring a dog?

If you are planning a slower trip, staying somewhere dog-friendly, and want to spend quality time outdoors, Costa Rica is a good country to bring a dog.

Many travelers visit Costa Rica for beaches, nature, small towns, outdoor restaurants, and longer stays. These types of trips work well with a dog, especially compared to destinations where your time is spent in museums, crowded public transit, or indoor attractions.

But Costa Rica is not effortless with a dog.

The climate can be hot and humid. Beaches, national parks, hotels, shuttles, and tours may have pet restrictions. Travel days can be longer than they look on a map, especially moving between regions. For small dogs used to flying in cabin, Costa Rica can be a very manageable destination. For larger dogs, nervous dogs, senior dogs, or dogs that struggle in warm weather, careful planning is required.

What do dogs need to enter Costa Rica?

To bring your dog to Costa Rica you will need a veterinary health certificate, proof of rabies vaccination, other relevant vaccination records, and parasite treatment.

The paperwork needs to show that your dog is healthy enough to travel and meets Costa Rica’s import requirements for dogs. Depending on the country you are traveling from the health certificate will need to be completed by an accredited veterinarian and endorsed by the proper government authority.

This is where many travelers get nervous, but the process is manageable if you start early. The key is to avoid treating the paperwork as a last-minute task. Your vet needs to know that this is for international travel to Costa Rica not just a normal wellness visit.

Does my dog need a health certificate for Costa Rica?

Yes you need a veterinary health certificate before bringing your dog to Costa Rica.

The health certificate is one of the most important documents in the process. It confirms that your dog has been examined by a veterinarian and is healthy enough to travel. It also needs to include your dog’s vaccination details, parasite treatment information, identification details, and travel information. Depending on your origin country it may also need official endorsement before you leave.

This is one of the easiest places to make a mistake because timing matters.

A normal vet appointment is not the same thing as an international travel health certificate appointment. Before you book make sure your vet understands that you are traveling internationally with your dog and that the destination is Costa Rica.

Can my dog fly in cabin to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica may allow dogs to enter but that does not automatically mean your dog can fly in the cabin. Cabin travel is controlled by the airline.

Most airlines that allow dogs in cabin require your dog to fit comfortably inside an approved soft-sided carrier that goes under the seat in front of you. Some airlines also have a combined pet-and-carrier weight limit. Others focus more on carrier fit than weight. This matters because a dog can be small enough to enter Costa Rica but still too large for cabin travel.

Can large dogs travel to Costa Rica?

Large dogs can travel to Costa Rica but the process is more complicated than traveling with a small dog. Large dogs typically cannot fly in the cabin unless they are trained service dogs.

If your dog is traveling as cargo, checked baggage, manifest cargo, or is not traveling on the same flight as you Costa Rica may require an import permit in addition to the normal health certificate and vaccination paperwork. This is especially important for large dogs because they are more likely to travel outside the cabin.

This is one reason large-dog travel to Costa Rica should be planned earlier than cabin travel.

What should I do before booking a flight to Costa Rica with my dog?

Before booking your flight check the dog travel requirements in the right order. The biggest mistake is buying your own ticket first and then trying to add your dog afterward. Sometimes that works, but it can also create problems if the flight does not accept pets, the pet spots are already full, your dog does not meet the airline’s cabin rules, or a large dog needs to travel in cargo with extra paperwork.

A better order is to first confirm that your dog can meet Costa Rica’s entry requirements, then check whether your airline accepts dogs on your exact route. From there confirm whether your dog can fly in cabin, checked baggage, cargo, or manifest cargo and review the carrier or crate rules before you buy the ticket. Once you know your dog is eligible and the airline can add them to the booking you can move forward with more confidence.

Common mistakes when bringing a dog to Costa Rica

The biggest mistake is assuming that Costa Rica’s entry rules and your airline’s pet rules are the same thing. Your airline can still deny boarding if your dog does not meet the carrier rules, cargo requirements, document timing, or pet reservation process.

Other common issues include waiting too long to book the vet appointment, assuming a small dog automatically qualifies for cabin travel, or forgetting to plan for Costa Rica itself once you arrive. You still need pet-friendly lodging, safe transportation, heat-aware walking plans, and realistic expectations around beaches, parks, and tours.

Should I bring my dog to Costa Rica?

Bringing your dog to Costa Rica can absolutely be worth it if you are staying long enough, choosing dog-friendly places, and your dog handles travel well. Costa Rica was wonderful for Beckham in many ways. He loved running on the beaches, meeting other dogs, and spending time at outdoor cafes and restaurants. In tourist areas we found many places to be very accommodating with dogs.

San José was also easier than I expected. We did a lot of walking through different neighborhoods and it gave Beckham a very different experience from the beach and jungle areas. That said, Costa Rica is not a destination where I would ignore the practical risks. The heat and humidity were always a major concern for me because Beckham is a pug and I had to be careful about when we walked, how long we stayed outside, and how quickly he could cool down.

The other thing I would not overlook is wildlife and environmental risk. When we were staying near the jungle a dog from the house next to ours was bitten and killed by a pit viper. That experience stayed with me. It does not mean you should avoid Costa Rica with a dog, but it does mean you need to be realistic about where your dog is walking, what they are sniffing, and how closely you supervise them in rural, beach, or jungle areas.

For Beckham, Costa Rica was one of the most rewarding places we traveled together but it worked because I adjusted the trip around him. If your dog is comfortable traveling, your documents are organized, and you are prepared for the heat, wildlife, and slower pace Costa Rica can be a great destination to experience with your dog. If your dog is older, anxious, heat-sensitive, or too large for cabin travel it is worth taking more time to decide whether the trip makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog to Costa Rica as a tourist?

Yes, tourists can usually bring dogs to Costa Rica as long as the dog meets the country’s entry requirements and is accepted by the airline. Before travel, you should prepare your dog’s health certificate, vaccination records, parasite treatment details, and any required endorsement, then confirm your airline’s pet policy before booking.

Is Costa Rica strict about bringing dogs into the country?

Costa Rica does have specific requirements for dogs entering the country, but the process is manageable if you prepare early. For many travelers, the bigger issue is not arrival in Costa Rica itself, but making sure the documents are complete and the airline accepts the dog at check-in.

Can I bring a small dog to Costa Rica in the cabin?

A small dog may be able to fly to Costa Rica in the cabin, but only if your airline allows pets in cabin on that route and your dog fits comfortably inside the approved carrier. Do not assume your dog qualifies based on weight alone, because carrier size, aircraft type, route rules, and airline limits all matter.

Can I bring a large dog to Costa Rica?

Yes, large dogs may be able to travel to Costa Rica, but they usually need to fly as checked baggage, cargo, or manifest cargo rather than in the cabin. You will need to confirm your airline’s large-dog policy, crate requirements, route restrictions, weather rules, breed restrictions, and whether your dog’s travel method requires extra import paperwork.

Is Costa Rica a good place to travel with a dog?

Costa Rica can be a great place to travel with a dog, especially for outdoor-focused trips, longer stays, and travelers who choose pet-friendly lodging. However, the heat, humidity, transportation, wildlife risks, beach rules, national park restrictions, and airline logistics can make the trip harder for some dogs, so the best choice depends on your dog’s size, health, temperament, and travel experience.
